TSIA2 Test Prep: Your Path to College Success

Everything Bellaire Cardinals and families need to understand the Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0, avoid remedial course fees, and move confidently into college-level classes.

Required Before Testing: Complete the PAA

The Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA) is mandatory before any Cardinal can schedule a TSIA2 test appointment.

What is the PAA?

The Pre-Assessment Activity includes practice questions and study resources to help you prepare effectively. You cannot register for the TSIA2 without completing it first.

Important Email Tip

Use a personal email address — not your HISD student account — when creating your College Board account. After graduation, you'll lose access to your school email, but you'll still need your TSIA2 scores when you enroll in college.

You May Not Need the TSIA2

Good news

If you have passing SAT or ACT scores, you can skip the TSIA2 entirely — and you can mix and match scores from both tests.

  • Math 530+ and EBRW 480+
Option B

ACT Route

  • Math 22+ AND English + Reading 40+ combined
Option C & D

Mix & Match

  • SAT Math 530+ and ACT English + Reading 40+ combined
  • ACT Math 22+ and SAT EBRW 480+

What is the TSIA2?

The Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 measures your readiness for college-level coursework in reading, writing, and math.

Purpose & Overview

The TSIA2 helps Texas colleges determine whether you're ready for college-level classes or need additional preparation first. It's an untimed, adaptive computer test — stronger performance leads to harder questions.

Why This Matters to You

Passing scores mean you can start earning college credit right away — no remedial classes, no extra tuition, no delays. Failing scores require paid remedial coursework, even at test-optional schools.

 

What does the score mean to you if you are not going to college? 

TSIA is testing whether someone can read a dense paragraph and pull out what matters, or work through multi-step math without a calculator holding their hand. Those aren't "college skills" — they're the same skills behind reading a lease, understanding a paycheck, following technical instructions on a job site, passing the ASVAB, or sitting for almost any trade certification (electrician, HVAC, cosmetology licensing exams all have a reading-comprehension component). The test is just the one we can measure. The skill shows up everywhere else.  Although it states “College Ready, in reality it is College and Career Ready.”

Test-Optional ≠ Score-Optional

Critical distinction

Many Texas colleges don't require tests for admission, but they do require passing scores for course placement.

If you don't have passing scores, you must:

  • Pay for remedial classes out of pocket (tuition and fees)
  • Attend the entire course (adds extra semester time)
  • Pass with satisfactory grades before taking college-level courses
  • Earn zero college credit toward your degree for these classes

Bottom line: prepare seriously for these tests to save time, money, and frustration.

Costs depend on your college and school district. Some offer free first attempts, while others may charge fees — check with your institution or the Bellaire Testing Office.

How to Access Your Scores

1. Log into your College Board account
2. Navigate to the TSIA2 scores section
3. Download your official score report PDF
4. Save it to your device and email it to yourself

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the TSIA2 take?
The TSIA2 is untimed and adaptive. Most students complete each section in 1–2 hours, with the full test taking 3–5 hours total if you take all sections.
Can I retake the TSIA2?
Yes — there's no limit on retakes. Individual colleges may have policies about wait times between attempts and fees ($10–$30 per section typically).
What are TSIA2 passing scores?
Subject Passing Score
Mathematics 950+
ELAR (Reading/Writing) 945+ AND essay score of 5 or higher
Critical: you must score 5 or higher on the essay portion to pass ELAR — this is a separate requirement from the reading/writing score.
What SAT/ACT scores exempt me from the TSIA2?
SAT: 480+ on EBRW and 530+ on Math. ACT: 22+ on Math and 40+ combined on English + Reading. You can mix scores between tests.
Where can I take the TSIA2?
Bellaire offers TSIA2 testing several times throughout the school year.  Students will be notified via HISD email of testing dates.
