School History

Bellaire High School opened in the fall of 1955 as part of Houston ISD, serving the City of Bellaire and nearby Houston neighborhoods such as Meyerland. From the beginning, the campus drew a diverse student body and strong community support—hallmarks that continue to define Bellaire today.

In 1979, Bellaire became an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, the first Texas adopter of the IB Diploma Programme, solidifying the school’s reputation for rigorous, globally minded academics. Over time, Bellaire also developed into HISD’s World Languages Magnet, offering deep study across numerous languages and advanced pathways in both IB and AP. IB World School listing.

As enrollment and programs grew, the campus evolved to meet new needs. Following years of planning and phased work on the original Maple Street site, Bellaire opened major portions of a new, purpose-built facility beginning with the 2021–22 school year. The multi-year, $141.5 million rebuild added modern classrooms, collaborative spaces, a competition gym, an auditorium, and an expanded natatorium—while preserving the school’s central courtyard feel and student “Main Street” experience.

Today, Bellaire High School remains a comprehensive 9–12 campus that blends tradition with innovation: strong college-ready academics, renowned world language offerings, vibrant arts, competitive athletics, and a rich array of student organizations. Generations of Cardinals have gone on to leadership in Houston and beyond, carrying forward the school’s values of scholarship, service, and community.
